Mahuri

  • We foster independence, support tamariki throughout the process.
  • We have a calm learning space – our front room is for quiet activities and our larger room is for creative endeavours, exploring messy play, and science experiments.
  • Tamariki can access puzzles, board games at anytime they choose, but we go by ‘Pick, Play, Put away’ when activity is finished.
  • Each child has a writing book, kete (which portfolio and special art pieces are kept).
  • When tamariki first start in the Māhuri class they decorate their own pot and plant a Spider baby. When they graduate to go school, they take their spider baby home.
  • Class activities, we regularly do activities together at mat time and throughout the day. Older tamariki encourage and support our younger tamariki in a tuakana teina relationship.
  • Our class kaupapa/rules and expectations are based on learning Virtues. Tamariki are learning about respect, responsibility, consideration, and patience to name a few.
  • We pride ourselves in building strong, trustworthy, kind, and open relationships with tamariki and their whānau.
  • We regularly speak in te reo Māori and in NZSL – New Zealand Sign language, often at the same time. By doing this we are connecting to others, the community and tamariki are developing multi-literacy and bi-literacy skills.
  • Te ao Māori values and principals are upheld in our learning environment. We all respect our living things, by looking after our things, ourselves, others, our plants, and our environment.
  • All of our tamariki voices are heard, we often have class chats, by sharing ideas and thoughts on the day, and what they would like to do. We are a team and we work together.
